Kootenay Lake East Shore

Ferry Information

The 35 minute ferry crossing between Kootenay Bay and Balfour is the longest and most scenic free ferry crossing in the world! If you’re a land lubber (or even if you’re a seasoned sailor) this is a treat you won’t want to miss.

The ferries are operated by the Ministry of Highways, with the Osprey 2000 running year round and the Balfour in the summer months. Cars and trucks are loaded in their order of arrival at the ferry terminal and for most of the year you will usually get the next ferry after you arrive. On busy holiday weekends and sometimes in mid-summer there are sailing waits, so be sure to allow for this in your schedule. Foot passengers can walk on at any sailing, and some people leave their cars at the terminal and just enjoy the lake cruise. To add to your enjoyment the Osprey 2000 has restaurant services.
